Here’s a list of the top ten telecom stories and whitepapers we published in 2019—the year in review!
1. | Apple begins support for carrier-verified call display in iOS 13 using STIR/SHAKEN | The Apple iOS 13 features list includes a feature for “carrier-verified calls.” This feature will indicate calls that have been verified by STIR/SHAKEN. |
2. | T-Mobile launches caller verification with STIR/SHAKEN | T-Mobile announced that they have launched new Caller Verified technology to give their customers relief from unwanted robocalls and caller ID spoofing. This service is their branded name for their STIR/SHAKEN deployment. |
3. | Out-of-Band SHAKEN call authentication | This whitepaper describes a way to enable STIR/SHAKEN for calls that use any telecom network. (Link revised to latest version) |
4. | Verizon STIR/SHAKEN testing | Verizon announced that they have completed calls using STIR/SHAKEN technology within their network. The company issued a statement that this exchange of STIR/SHAKEN-enabled calls is a critical step in restoring trust in caller ID. Verizon also advised that they will begin to deploy STIR/SHAKEN on their interconnections with all major carriers. |
5. | SIP Analytics vs. CDR-based fraud management – a case study | A large telephone service provider was recently evaluating SIP Analytics® fraud prevention alongside their incumbent CDR-based telecom fraud management system. Then a telecom fraud attack hit. |

7. | How to prevent Telephony Denial of Service (TDoS) attacks | Telephony Denial of Service (TDoS) attacks can overwhelm critical telephone systems, such as emergency response numbers or call centers. The good news: effective solutions are available. |
8. | Rich Call Data and STIR/SHAKEN | This whitepaper describes how Rich Call Data presents caller info to the called parties to encourage them to answer the call. Because it’s verified by STIR/SHAKEN, it’s up-to-date and secure. We think this will be one of the greatest benefits of STIR/SHAKEN deployment. |
9. | FCC filings calling for Out-of-Band STIR/SHAKEN call authentication | Several organizations have filed comments with the FCC urging support for Out-of-Band STIR/SHAKEN call authentication to enable widespread participation in STIR/SHAKEN. |
10. | STIR/SHAKEN display standards are emerging | The STIR/SHAKEN standards did not dictate how verification service (STI-VS) results should be displayed for users. This has been under discussion for a while, and standards are emerging. |
