Preparing a brand for Branded Calling ID

Branded Calling ID™ (BCID) provides valuable benefits to enterprise callers. Voice Service Providers (VSPs) can provide secure, standards-based, nonproprietary BCID services to their enterprise customers. In this article, we will provide basic information explaining how an enterprise, working with their BCID provider, prepares their brand to use BCID.

When an enterprise arranges with their VSP for BCID service, there is an onboarding and vetting process to collect brand information and have it vetted. This ensures that brand information presented in calls is trustworthy. Let’s review the types of information that is collected and vetted.

Caller Background Identity Information

The caller information is typical KYC (Know-Your-Customer) information that is collected for many types of business services. It includes the enterprise name, website, DUNS number or Federal Employer ID Number, domain name, and other business identifiers.

The onboarding and vetting process also collects information that the enterprise intends to use in branding its calls.

Calling Telephone Numbers

The vetting process requires a list of the calling telephone numbers that the enterprise will use to originate BCID calls and related audit information used to validate that these numbers are associated with the caller.

Caller Display Name

The enterprise provides the caller display name(s) that they will use, along with audit information to establish that they can legitimately use this name. The vetting process also checks that the caller display name does not contain SHAFT (Sex/Hate/Alcohol/Firearms/Tobacco) information.

Call Logo

The BCID framework can provide a logo for display on supported handsets. The logo image is checked against the USPTO (US Patent and Trademark Office) to ensure that the logo, if registered, is not registered to someone else.

Call Reason

The BCID framework supports call reason text for display on supported handsets. The framework has a list of preapproved call reasons. The enterprise can choose from this list or request the use of a custom call reason. Examples of preapproved call reasons include “Appointment Reminder,” “Customer Service,” “Returning Your Call,” and “Upcoming Delivery.”

Next steps

The onboarding and vetting process should be straightforward and smooth with a bit of planning to get ready. Onboarding and vetting agents are familiar with the process and can help an enterprise get started.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do enterprises typically brand all their outbound calls?

It’s the enterprise’s choice which calls to brand. In our experience, many brand only certain types of time-sensitive, high-value calls, for example:

  • Health care provider calling with an appointment reminder
  • Home services company calling to let the homeowner know that the service technician is about to arrive for a scheduled appointment.
  • Auto service shop calling to ask for permission to perform additional services identified during car inspection.

How long can the call reason be?

The call reason can be up to 35 characters long. However, it helps to be concise, as mobile phone users typically decide whether to answer a call quickly.

Must the call logo be trademarked with the USPTO?

No, the call logo does not have to be trademarked. However, it cannot be registered to another entity.

How long does the vetting process take?

This depends in part on how quickly and thoroughly the needed materials are gathered during preplanning. Having a plan to collect these items in advance will speed things up.
