Google rolling out AI agent calling feature
Google announced the rollout of a new AI agent feature that will make phone calls on users’ behalf. Let’s have a look.
Call for Me
This feature uses Google Gemini artificial intelligence (AI). The user enters the call request details into the Google Gemini app, then taps Call for me.
The Gemini AI agent places the call using the device’s mobile network and phone number. It can work through automated phone menus and remain on hold until a person answers.
Once a person answers, Gemini starts the call by telling the other party that it’s an AI assistant from Google calling on the caller’s behalf. It states the caller’s name and discloses that this is a recorded call.
The user can monitor the call transcript during the call or after it completes.
Requirements and limitations
Users must meet the following requirements:
- Over 18 years old
- In the U.S. and using a U.S. SIM card
- Using a Pixel 11 phone with the device language set to English
- Signed in to the latest version of the Gemini mobile app with a Google AI subscription
- Have the Public Beta version of the Phone by Google app
There are some limitations:
- Calls can only be made to businesses
- Gemini won’t make emergency calls, calls with financial transactions, calls that relate to sensitive personal information, or telemarketing calls
- The Call for Me feature is being rolled out gradually and is not available to all users right away.
AI implications
Will this feature be good or not-so-good for consumers and the telecom industry?
We think it’s interesting to see AI agent capabilities brought to consumer phone calls. If all goes well, this could reinvigorate telephone service and usage.
We don’t expect this to be used or abused by bad actors because it requires a subscription and a user to be signed in. We recognize that bad actors are using AI but would likely do that on their own outside of a subscription service.
