Apple to allow users to change iPhone default calling app
Apple announced that an upcoming version of its iPhone and iPad software will allow users to change the default app on their device for many types of features, including calling. Let’s have a look.
This feature will be available in iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2. An August announcement had indicated that this capability would be available to all EU users to comply with the EU Digital Market Act.
However, Apple’s October announcement for the iOS 18.2/iPadOS 18.2 beta release stated that these capabilities will be available for all users worldwide.
The October announcement also includes guidance on preparing your app to be the default calling app.
Why would someone develop a third-party calling app for the iPhone? It would enable them to leverage features available in the iOS SDK, including the CallKit library. This might encourage innovation in iPhone calling features. And with iOS 18.2, users would be able to select a third-party calling app as the default calling app on their phone.
Before going down that road, however, a developer would have to research the iPhone SDKs carefully to ensure that the platform supports the capabilities that a developer would like to use.
