STIR/SHAKEN mandate signed into U. S. law
President Trump signed the Pallone-Thune TRACED Act into law on December 30, 2019. This legislation includes several measures to combat unwanted robocalls, including a mandate for voice service providers to use STIR/SHAKEN call authentication.
The Pallone-Thune TRACED Act has a wide range of requirements, which are described in this overview. One of the most notable provisions is a mandate for call authentication using STIR/SHAKEN in IP networks and reasonable measures in non-IP networks.
“I’m delighted the President signed this overwhelmingly bipartisan bill into law,” Congressman Pallone said. “This legislation will put Americans back in control of their phones. These calls are not just annoying – they also are scams targeted at consumers. I thank my colleagues in Congress who helped get this important legislation signed into law.”
The White House Press Office issued the following statement about the signing of this act:
This historic legislation will provide American consumers with even greater protection against annoying unsolicited robocalls. American families deserve control over their communications, and this legislation will update our laws and regulations to stiffen penalties, increase transparency, and enhance government collaboration to stop unwanted solicitation. President Donald J. Trump is proud to have worked with Congress to get this bipartisan legislation to his desk, and even prouder to sign it into law today.
